Could you be a School Governor?

We are very fortunate to have a hard working group of volunteers who form the Governing Body at our school. Sadly we have three Governors who are completing their terms and so we will be saying goodbye to co-opted governor Sara Crane (who has served for eight years), parent Governor John Ormond and Foundation Governor Ady Blizzard (who have both served for four years). We therefore have three vacancies for governor roles coming up which we want to fill as soon as possible and we would like YOU to consider whether you might be willing to take up one of these positions to support our school community.

The governing body's main tasks are:

  • to ensure that the school has a clear vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • to hold the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils;
  • and to oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure its money is well spent.

All governors are welcomed as valued members of the team and play a vital role in ensuring the governing body is aware of the views of parents and the local community. We feel sure that there are parents, grandparents and local people who are prepared to take on this important role and give their time and commitment to helping us to continue to improve the school's performance – let us know if it is YOU.

In looking to fill this vacancy the governors of the school have identified the following skills, experience and attributes that they feel would help strengthen the governing body:

  • A passion for ensuring that all pupils receive the best possible education and opportunities (essential)
  • A positive attitude (essential)
  • Time to give to the school, and a willingness to give that time, both during school time and at evening meetings (essential)
  • Background experience of working within education, finance or personnel (desirable)

Training and support will be available to help you develop into the role. This will include in-house mentoring and support as well as access to excellent external governor training run by Hampshire Governor Services.

If you feel you can help in this capacity please complete and return an application form to the school by 12.00 noon on 21st June 2019.

The guidelines giving full details about how vacancies are filled can be found on the school’s website. You suggest that you also look at the information for prospective governors on the Hampshire County Council website. You will find video, e-learning and written information on the site and all of these will provide you with further details about the role.

Please note that for the protection of children all governor appointments are subject to an identity check.

Application forms can be collected from the school office or downloaded from the foot of this page.  Please state on your application which of the three roles you feel is most suited to your experience and skills and you may use an additional page if required to write about this on your application form. If there are more applications for the parent governor role than vacancies, we will hold an election and you will be sent a voting paper in due course. You may return the ballot paper either via your child or by post.
