Heartsmart award

The Heartsmart work has been introduced this school year as part of our yearlong School Development focus on well-being, particularly mental health. We introduced this at the Meet the Teacher session and it is very much linked to our resilience work which was introduced at Maureen Bowes' presentation on 3rd October for Parents and Carers.

Our teaching is currently to explain the Heartsmart high-five aims;

  • Don't Forget to Let Love In
  • Too Much Selfie Isn't Healthy
  • Don't Rub it in, Rub it Out!
  • Fake is a Mistake
  • 'No Way through' isn't true!

There are some excellent lessons around each area and the language is designed to appeal to all ages of children but is explained at an age appropriate level. The central character of Heartsmart is Boris the robot who children can relate to very easily. Like many of us he has two voices in his head and we learn that he can often focus on the negative feedback of the Scrapman’s voice who tells him that he is “no good”. In our work with the children we also talk about the positive voices of friends who want the best for you. This helps children to become more self-aware and hopefully to unpick the way in which they speak to themselves.As we are now embedding the learning we have built a weekly award in our Gold Book assembly to highlight a child who is a positive Heartsmart ambassador at our school. The 'prize' is to draw a special page in our Heartsmart book. Great work!
