This week at Bentley...

This week has been another busy and exciting one at school. The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in National Numeracy Day, celebrating all things maths! Taking advantage of the lovely weather, many classes took their learning outside, enjoying practical and engaging mathematical activities in the sunshine. Thank you to Mrs Blake for organising the day.

Several of our classes were also fortunate enough to welcome an author into school this week. Many of the children will remember Simon Murray visiting us last year, and it was wonderful to welcome him back once again. Following his visit, he commented:

“All the children at your lovely school were very polite and respectful – they all listened very well and produced some wonderful work throughout their sessions.”

It is always valuable for children to hear directly from a real-life author about the process of creating stories, editing drafts and developing ideas, as this closely aligns with our writing curriculum in school.

This week also marked Prayer Week, during which all classes visited St Mary's Church and took part in activities linked to this year’s theme. We were delighted to receive some wonderful feedback from the team there:

“Just to say we had a brilliant time with Year 3 and 5 today in the church – they were brilliantly behaved, very respectful and seemed to enjoy themselves!”

As Headteacher, it is always such a pleasure to receive positive feedback about the children. It is wonderful to know that our school values of love, courage and community, alongside our school rules of being ready, respectful and safe, are being demonstrated so positively beyond the classroom.

I hope you all have a wonderful half-term break and that the weather is kind to us all — or at the very least, that we avoid any more freak hail storms!

SAFEGUARDING

Parenting today can feel overwhelming — especially when childhood looks so different from what we grew up with. There’s no manual, and it can be hard to keep up with the fast-changing digital world your child moves through every day. This guide aims to make those conversations easier and help you support your child with confidence.

ARITHMAGICIANS

The Arithmagicians competition is back, and the challenge is on to see which class will come out on top!

Over half term (until 1st June), children can earn as many points as possible. The class with the highest total will win an extra playtime—so get involved and give it your best effort!

Remember, your points can also be spent during the first week back on rewards such as house points, extra playtime, or even an ice lolly with Mrs Blake.

Good luck, everyone—let the competition begin!

NATIONAL NUMERACY DAY

On Wednesday, the whole school celebrated National Numeracy Day with an exciting Maths Relay Race in their house teams. Teamwork and problem-solving skills were put to the test, with Wilberforce crowned overall champions, closely followed by Kolbe in second place.

Throughout the day, each class also took their maths learning outdoors, swapping pencils for colourful chalk to create number challenges, calculations and mathematical artwork across the playground. By the end of the day, the playground had been transformed into a vibrant celebration of learning!

In French lessons, Madame Jones continued the focus on numbers with a range of fun games and puzzles linked to French counting. Year 6 even extended their learning by exploring numbers in Spanish too!

PRAYER WEEK

Each class was kindly invited by St Mary's Church to visit their special prayer room as part of the church’s annual Prayer Week.

The children enjoyed taking part in the thoughtful and reflective activities, especially making their own windmills and learning that, just like the wind — which cannot be seen but is always present — God is always with us too.

It was a wonderfully calm and peaceful experience for everyone, and the children also enjoyed the beautiful countryside walk to and from the church.

Hidden Treasure Hunt – a national recycling challenge

There are two weeks left of the Hidden Treasure Hunt and for the chance to win tech for school and home.  Please hunt out unwanted or broken tech and electrical items at home and recycle them at Curry’s or at Farnham and Alton Recycling Centres – click here for more details.  Please note, if you are NOT dropping off your items at Currys, please take a photo when you recycle them to upload as evidence – you will be asked to upload this photo when you register – click here to register and scroll down to ‘How to register your recycling’.

Every time a family registers their recycling, our school earns a Planet Care Point and moves up the national leaderboard. Schools can win thousands of pounds in Currys’ vouchers for Microsoft tech, and families who take part are entered into prize draws to win Currys’ vouchers for Microsoft tech too. As an extra incentive Eco Council will be awarding a ‘Dolphin Award’ to those children who participate.  Pupils should bring in a photo of them recycling their tech at Curry’s or a recycling centre.  Please note only one dolphin will be awarded per child.

Please do get involved and share with your friends and family to help us to win some Microsoft tech for our school. The campaign runs until Friday 5 June 2026.
