  • This week at Bentley...

This week, we have been incredibly proud of our Year 6 children during their SATs tests. The children have come into school each day with such a positive attitude, showing resilience, determination and maturity throughout the week. Most importantly, every single child has tried their very best and should feel extremely proud of themselves.

To celebrate the end of SATs week and reward the children for all of their hard work, they are currently enjoying a well-deserved trip to Legoland. I am sure they are having a fantastic time together and making lots of special memories.

During SATs week, it has become a lovely tradition for the children to enjoy a sausage or bacon roll each day once the tests are complete. A huge thank you must go to our wonderful kitchen team, who prepared these treats every day on top of cooking all of our school dinners. Your kindness and support helped make the week feel extra special for our Year 6 children.

Elise Cavanough, our Chair of Governors, has asked me to share this with you all:

"This week I have had the privilege of invigilating at all the SATs exams completed by our Year 6 pupils, in my role as a governor overseeing the administration of the tests. I was struck by the maturity and calmness that all the children demonstrated throughout. As in previous years, the children had been well prepared. They joined Year 6 children across the country, on the same date and at the same time, to sit the same papers, in formal exam conditions. The purpose of these exams is to ensure that children leave primary school with the knowledge and skills set out in the National Curriculum at the conclusion of Key Stage 2, ready for the next stage of their learning at secondary school. Termly assessments are a core part of learning at Bentley, so they are very familiar with the concept. Assessment is a key part of establishing the progress of children and identifying areas of challenge. As in the SATs exams, children with special educational needs have access arrangements appropriate to them to ensure equity.

The comradeship and mutual encouragement I saw on display amongst our Year 6 pupils was wonderful. A huge thank you to all the staff who supported this week - first among them our incredible year 6 teaching team of Mrs Blake and Mrs Williams, supported by Miss Miles. There are also a large group of others, along with governors, who ensured all the tests ran smoothly. On behalf of all the governors, thank you so much for your hard work and I congratulate all of Year 6 on their achievements this week.  Today they are enjoying a well deserved treat - a class trip to Legoland. But they still have a great deal ahead this term - new topics of study, a residential and preparations for their much anticipated Leaver's Play. You will be able to spot them as they are all now sporting their Class of 26 Hoodies! Have a fun and relaxing weekend Year 6 - you deserve it!

Elise Cavanough - Chair of Governors"

We also wanted to say a huge well done to Year 1 following their trip to Arundel Castle this week. Miss Hastie was incredibly proud of the levels of curiosity the class showed throughout the day, alongside their impeccable behaviour. The children represented Bentley beautifully and were a credit to both their families and our school. Well done, Year 1!

This week, all classes have also had the opportunity to visit our wonderful new Attenborough Garden with Madam Jones. Each class has designed a set of rules to help us think carefully about how we can look after and protect this very special space. We are looking forward to using the garden regularly as part of our learning and reflection time.

    Have a lovely weekend.

The house points from this week will be added to next week’s totals as Year 6 were not here today.

    ATTENDANCE

Governors have set the attendance target for the school at 97%. The class with the best attendance last week were Year R and Year 2. Well done R and Year 2!

Attendance figures for each class for last week are below:

    SAFEGUARDING

Instagram has announced a new feature that will notify parents if their teenager repeatedly searches for terms related to suicide or self-harm within a short period of time. The news from Meta details how alerts will be sent to parents who use Instagram’s parental supervision tools and will subsequently provide guidance and resources to help them approach sensitive conversations with their child.

    ECO UPDATE

    The Attenborough Garden

After a year of digging, planting, watering and creating, our beautiful Attenborough Garden was opened last Friday by Fiona Scully from Butterfly Conservation.  What started as a response to the Butterfly Emergency, has developed into a lovely community project involving some rather wonderful people including Robin, Catherine and Maschajt from Bentley, Alton Men’s Shed and Pepperpot Herbs.  In addition, nearly 40 of our pupils have been involved in the garden’s creation, inspiring future gardeners, naturalists and conservationists.  We are also very grateful for funding from the South Downs National Park Renature Fund as well as Groundwork UK and The Pilanesburg Foundation.  Following the incredible legacy of the work of Sir David Attenborough, children at Bentley now have a wonderful ecosystem to learn about plants and animals as well as a space to enjoy and care for nature. Thanks to our fabulous new gazebo, the children will be able to enjoy the garden whatever the weather! In the words of Sir David, “No one will protect what they don't care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced.”

Our school is part of the National Education Nature Park and is featured on their website, click here to read more about our garden.

    Hedgehog House

Thank you to Arthur in Year 5 and his dad for creating a fantastic hedgehog house for our Attenborough Garden. We hope that the hedgehogs of Bentley find their way to our garden!

    Attenborough Day

To celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday on May 8th, our school community hosted ‘Attenborough Day’.  Throughout the day, the children participated in a range of activities linked to the life and work of Sir David Attenborough. In Year 6 the children created beautiful collage animals to display quotes by Sir David Attenborough whilst our youngest children made birthday cards and a delicious birthday cake which was shared at the garden opening.  To conclude the day, many of the children came together with children all over the country for a live assembly at 2.15pm in honour Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday.

Hidden Treasure Hunt – a national recycling challenge

Families are encouraged to hunt out unwanted or broken tech and electrical items at home and recycle them at Curry’s or Farnham and Alton Recycling Centres – click here for more details.  Please note, if you are NOT dropping off your items at Currys, please take a photo when you recycle them to upload as evidence – you will be asked to upload this photo when you register – click here to register and scroll down to ‘How to register your recycling’.

Every time a family registers their recycling, our school earns a Planet Care Point and moves up the national leaderboard. Schools can win thousands of pounds in Currys’ vouchers for Microsoft tech, and families who take part are entered into prize draws to win Currys’ vouchers for Microsoft tech too. As an extra incentive Eco Council will be awarding a ‘Dolphin Award’ to those children who participate.  Pupils should bring in a photo of them recycling their tech at Curry’s or a recycling centre.  Please note only one dolphin will be awarded per child.

Please do get involved and share with your friends and family to help us to win some Microsoft tech for our school. The campaign runs until Friday 5 June 2026.
