This week at Bentley...

Although the weather has been cold this week, we have been lucky that it has stayed dry, which has meant the children have enjoyed plenty of time outside. One highlight for me was watching some of our Year 5 and 6 children playing a football match at lunchtime. Their sportsmanship was brilliant to see — congratulating each other on goals and saves — and the match ended with a phenomenal 9–9 draw!

Our clubs also started back this week. A huge thank you to Mrs Hamid, who works tirelessly to provide such a wide variety of opportunities for the children. She is always looking for new ideas and this term we are excited to be offering a Magic Club! I am very much looking forward to seeing some impressive tricks performed soon. Thank you also to all our staff who give up their time to provide these fantastic enrichment opportunities.

You may have seen the survey I sent out regarding our new school dinners. We have already had some wonderful feedback — lots of positives as well as helpful suggestions to share with Caterlink. I will also be passing on the many kind comments to our kitchen team, who have been working so hard.

It was also lovely to see so many of you at the PTFA afternoon tea last week. There was a fantastic turnout, and the sandwiches, cakes and scones were truly delicious. Thank you for your support in making events like this so successful.

Finally, if you know of anyone who has a child starting school in September, please do encourage them to visit us. We also have leaflets available at reception — if you know of any local places where they could be shared, please do take some to help us spread the word.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

SAFEGUARDING – PLEASE READ!

This week, the children took part in the NSPCC Speak Out Stay Safe programme. The NSPCC team visited school and led engaging assemblies and workshops with Years 2, 5 and 6, helping children to understand how they can keep themselves safe and who they can talk to if they ever feel worried. Every class also took part in follow-up activities to reinforce the key messages.

As part of the programme, the children were introduced to Talk PANTS – a simple way for parents and carers to have conversations with their children to help keep them safe from sexual abuse. Each letter of PANTS provides an easy-to-remember message:

  • P: Privates are private
  • A: Always remember your body belongs to you
  • N: No means no
  • T: Talk about secrets that upset you
  • S: Speak up, someone can help

You can find more information and free resources to support these conversations at www.nspcc.org.uk/pants

ATTENDANCE

Governors have set the attendance target for the school at 97%. The class with the best attendance last week was Year R. Well done Year R!

THANK YOU…

…to the Tagg family for the tea set and the colouring books. We really appreciate your generosity!

FAVOURITES DAY MENU

Next Thursday, 2nd October, is Census Day. This is an important day for schools, as the number of school dinners taken by children in Years R–2 (KS1) directly affects the funding we receive to educate your children.

We would be incredibly grateful if ALL KS1 children could order a school dinner on this day. If you are concerned your child might not enjoy the meal, please feel free to send a back-up lunch box as a precaution.

To make the day extra special, we will be serving a Favourites Day menu for all children:

Main:

  •  Crispy Coated Chicken
  •  or Veggie Dippers

Sides:

  •  Chips
  •  Peas and Baked Beans
  •  Tomato Ketchup

Dessert:

  • Mini Doughnuts and Fruit

Please note:

  • All lunches for Years R–2 are free of charge.
  • For Years 3–6, the meal cost is £3.00.
  • Children with allergies will receive a separate email confirming their special menu options.

Thank you very much for your support in helping us maximise funding for our school.

ECO UPDATE

Eco Council – 2025-2026

This week the new Eco Council met together for the first time to learn about their new role as a ‘Planet Champion’.  There will be 3 teams this year to tackle our sustainability work in school: Team Energy, Team Food and Team Nature.  This term our focus will be on Team Energy with our upcoming ‘Switch off Fortnight’ event in November.

Young ACAN Schools’ Partnership

Bentley is proud to be a member of the Young ACAN Schools’ Partnership, which is led by Madame Jones, together with every school in our area. This year the focus is on food with the project ‘Eating for our Planet’.

Nature Guardians

This week ‘Nature Guardian’ training began with a session led by Ceri Jones from the National Education Nature Park (NENP).  The session focused on the children mapping nature on our school grounds.  This information is now on the NENP online map, helping scientists to understand more about the nature in school grounds all over the country.
