This week at Bentley...

It’s been a busy and exciting time at school! Many of our classes are currently practising for Sports Day – there’s a real buzz of energy around PE lessons, as the children prepare for their events.

Year 1 had a special trip to Bentley Station this week to plant flowers with the lovely ladies from the Gardening Club. The children did a fantastic job, and we’d encourage you all to take a look at the planters next time you’re passing – we think they bring a little bit of happiness to everyone who sees them. A huge thank you to everyone involved in this brilliant community project!

Meanwhile, our Year 6 children are away at Calshot this week, enjoying lots of adventures and new experiences. They've been taking part in a range of activities and are having a brilliant time. Thank you so much to the staff who have accompanied them – we really appreciate the time and care you’ve given.

A quick reminder about PE kits:
Please make sure your child has their full PE kit in school at all times. We are finding that too many children are without the correct kit, which can make it difficult for them to take part safely. For health and safety reasons, it's essential that children are wearing suitable clothing and footwear for PE. Please don’t rely on staff having spare kits available – thank you for your support in helping us keep PE safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Snacks and healthy choices:
A reminder that any snacks brought in for playtime or lunchtime must be fresh fruit or vegetables only. Please avoid fruit-related products like fruit winders, fruit bars or fruit-flavoured snacks – these often contain high levels of sugar and are not part of our healthy schools approach. Thank you for helping us promote healthy eating habits across the school.

HOUSEPOINTS

This week’s housepoints totals will be added to next week’s for a bumper week!

ATTENDANCE

Governors have set the attendance target for the school at 97%. Last week the overall attendance rate for the whole school was 89.51%. The classes with the best attendance were Year 1 and Year 2, both with 98.67% attendance. Well done year 1 and year 2!

SAFEGUARDING – EVERYBODY’S BUSINESS

Please may we remind you that all children must have a water bottle in school every day. It is essential that children stay hydrated in order to cope with all the demands of a school day, and in the current hot weather it is even more important to drink regularly. Unfortunately, we have a lot of children coming to school without a water bottle. We are keeping records of those children who consistently fail to bring one to school.

SCHOOL LUNCHES UPDATE

We are delighted that from September 2025 Caterlink will be the new provider for our school meals. We have worked with ten other local Alton schools to secure this contract and are looking forward to enjoying their delicious meals. They are especially proud of supplying fresh ingredients sourced locally and regionally. A draft menu has been shared with parents this week – we will share a finalised version when we can.

NORTH 2 SOUTH SUMMER CAMP

During the summer holidays (4th-6th August) Kathleen Proud and Sarah Forbes are running a holiday club here at school. Please see the poster below for more details.

SCHOOL NURSING AND SCHOOL NURSING SERVICES

Have you or your child had contact with a health visitor or school nurse in the last two years? Hampshire County Council want to hear from parents and carers of children aged 0–19 about your experiences with Hampshire’s Public Health Nursing Service. Your feedback will help us make sure the service continues to meet the changing needs of families across the county.

The survey takes less than 10 minutes and is open until 1 July.đŸ‘‰Share your views here:https://www.facebook.com/hantsconnect Thank you!

ECO-UPDATE

Eco Council Reuse & Relove Stall – Donations needed

Our fantastic Eco Council is hosting a stall at the upcoming PTFA Summer Fair on Saturday 5th July.  To help us to raise as much money as possible, we would like to ask for donations of good-quality, clean summer-related children’s items.  Eco Council has brainstormed a list of ideas:

  • Summer clothing – swimming gear, shorts and t-shirts, summer dresses
  • Beach items – body boards, inflatables, buckets and spades, beach games

Please bring them into school office where there is a large box awaiting your donations! Thank you so much.

Pollinator Garden Update

Our fabulous pollinator garden is really beginning to take shape thanks to the installation of 3 raised beds and the hard work of the children and fabulous local resident Robin Welland-Jones who deserves a special mention for creating a butterfly shaped bed ready for some lovely herbs. The next stage is planting wildflowers and herbs to ensure that our garden is attractive to a range of pollinators and birds.  We are very grateful for the funding from the South Downs National Park #Renature fund which has enabled us to buy our Everedge raised beds (highly recommended company) as well as bulk bags of compost and plants.

Nature Guardians Club

Next year Madame Jones will be training the next generation of Nature Guardians in a special after-school club.  The club will take place on a Monday after-school and using the National Education Nature Park resources, we will continue our journey of wildling our school grounds.  Spaces will be very limited and interested children will be invited to a meeting next week to find out more.

Big Bentley Switch Off

For the next two weeks, Eco Council will be challenging pupils and staff at Bentley to reduce our electricity consumption to lower our carbon footprint and bills.  Everybody will be challenged at school to switch off lights, whiteboards and computers when not needed.  Why not continue the challenge at home and see the difference you can make to your electricity bill?
